Join Date Sep 2001 Location salem, oregon Posts 454. Is there a way to check neumann serial numbers? Stephen Paul Modified Neumann U87. Neumann Serial Number Date Jun 21, 2004 This is the closest surrounding dates to your U87 I can give you: U87 #31628 was shipped on U87 #32473 was shipped on Hope that gives you a clue. The Neumann U87 is the large-diaphragm condenser microphone.
I've done a shootout using it against.. An MXL990, A Rode NT-1A, and an AKG C414 xlII. The Neumann outperformed the MXL and NT-1 hands down and the 414 was 'getting there' but the neumann still had a little extra something to the sound that the AKG didn't have.
I have been very happy with it so far (for the last few weeks) but I have noticed that it takes significant extra gain on my preamp to get it to the same level as the AKG or Rode. What sort of problem is this? The mic sounds damn good as it is!
This is an older model. It just says Neumann U87 on it. no 'a' or 'ai' on it. The age isn't really a concern to me as I've actually heard that the older ones sound better from all the research i did on forums and reviews and such.
I can give more info such as the serial # if needed. I just wanted to clear up a few questions that I had about this mic. It feels like a privilege every time I pull this mic out of the case. So much history behind it.

Highly regarded and commended. One of the last classic models among the condenser studio microphones. A natural, faithful sound makes it suitable for recording from many sources. Our microphone is in a rather good condition, it has quite an early serial number and the original basket.
NEUMANN UM 57

Beautifully preserved tube microphone with variable characteristics. Yet, unfortunately, we were unable to get an adequate power supply. Perfect condition, microphone appears to be unused. Original padded box included. A 6-pin socket.

A beautiful piece, we decided to put in a the Neumann section. A tube condenser microphone with a built-in power supply, which unfortunately generates noise, unacceptable today. A switch of characteristics. A relatively rare chrome-plated version. Ours is in perfect condition.
