Installing Windows Games Using Wine To run Windows games or software, you’ll need to download the files for them as you would on Windows. The Wine team announced the new development release Wine 6.4 with new features and various bug-fixes.

Other changes in the release include:

How to Install Wine 6.4 in Ubuntu:
The new release package will be available in next a few days for Ubuntu 18.04, Ubuntu 20.04, and Ubuntu 20.10.
Open terminal either by pressing Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard, or by searching for ‘terminal’ from system application menu. When it opens, run following steps one by one.

IMPORTANT: In this command, you have to replace focal with:
- focal for Ubuntu 20.04, Linux Mint 20.x

Warning Installing the current version of Wine will make significant permanent changes to Zorin, so you need to be aware of how Zorin works, what changes will occur, and the pros and cons of upgrading Wine to the latest versions. For this, continue reading. When you are ready to install a current version of Wine, follow the procedure for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS to install WineHQ's most recently released version. As of August 28, 2020, these are Wine 5.0.2 Stable and Wine 5.15 Development and Staging.
Zorin's Wine Versions
Zorin's Software app offers Wine 4.0.3 (stable) and Wine 3.6 (development). However, after installing Wine 4.0.3 through Zorin's Software app, the wine command is not recognized in Terminal. After similarly installing Wine 3.6, Terminal does recognize the wine command, and the version of Wine is 3.6.
If Zorin's Windows App Support is installed from within Zorin's Software app, Terminal does recognize the wine command, and the version of Wine is 4.0.3.
Wine may also be installed using either of the following Terminal commands.
$ sudo apt install wine-stable
$ sudo apt install wine-development
The first of the above installs Wine 4.0.3, but, after installation, the wine Terminal command is not recognized. The second installs Wine 3.6, and the wine command is recognized.
About Zorin
Zorin OS makes a number of Windows apps immediately available for installation. These are Snap packages which include Wine in order to enable the app to run under Linux. There is a chance that the Windows app you need is already available as a Snap, so click Zorin's software icon and do a search to find out.
If the Windows app you need is not already available as a Snap, Zorin's Windows App Support feature enables seamless installation of Windows apps from Windows .exe and .msi installation files. The only limitation is that not all Windows apps can run using Wine. If in doubt, check the Wine Application Database or just install your app and try it out.
Zorin's Windows App Support
Windows App Support is a built-in feature integrating Wine into Zorin OS. Once activated, both Wine and Play on Linux are installed, and installing Windows apps in Zorin is much like installing Windows apps in Windows.
Before activating Windows App Support, it is good to ensure the latest package updates are installed. One way to do this is through the Updates tab of the Software app.
Alternatively, you can use these Terminal commands.
$ sudo apt update
$ sudo apt upgrade
With that done, here are two ways to install Wine Stable in Zorin. One way uses the Software app.
- Click the 'Software' icon in the task bar.
- Search using the keyword 'wine' (without the quotes, of course).
- In the page that opens, scroll down until, near the bottom, you come to 'Windows App Support' and click it.
- Click the 'Install' button.
Alternatively, if you have not previously installed a Windows app …
- Right-click a Windows installation file, either .exe or .msi (previously downloaded into a local folder, perhaps /Downloads).
- In the panel that opens, click Open With Install Windows Application.
- Respond to prompts as Zorin installs Windows App Support (including requests to download Mono once and Gecko twice) followed by your Windows app. The two Gecko downloads are probably for 32-bit and 64-bit versions.
- If an icon for the Windows app is installed on the desktop, clicking it may provoke an 'Untrusted application launcher' warning. Assuming you know the Windows app to be safe, just click the 'Trust and Launch' button.
- In the future, when you right-click a Windows installation file and choose Open With Install Windows Application, only your Windows app is installed. No need to reinstall Wine.
Whichever of these two procedures you follow, both Wine and Play on Linux are installed, and the installed apps panel contains a new category, 'Wine'. Click the 'Z' icon to see it.

Wine Stable versus Wine Development

Zorin's Windows App Support installs a version of Wine Stable, and a version of Wine Development is available in Zorin's Software app. These may not be the latest versions, and it may be that your Windows app requires an up-to-date version of Wine Stable or Wine Development. In such a case, upgrading Zorin to a current version of Wine Stable or Wine Development can be both necessary and reasonable.
My experience has been that, after replacing Zorin's Wine, everything except Windows App Support works. Windows apps installed from Snap packages include their own instance of Wine and are unaffected. Windows apps previously installed using Windows App Support automatically update themselves the first time they execute under Wine Development. The Wine third-party support apps, PlayOnLinux and Winetricks, are still installed and work as expected. However, Windows App Support, if it was previously installed, has been uninstalled.
Updating Zorin's Wine has pros and cons. Here are some cons.
- Wine is a project continually under development. Instances of Wine from the Development branch are under ongoing active development, which puts installations of Wine Development at risk of temporary sudden unanticipated failure, though, in practice, such failures are rare, and relying on Wine Development is a common practice.
- Because an upgrade of Wine uninstalls Windows App Support, the Zorin OS option to install Windows apps with a single right-click on a Windows installation file is no longer available. Instead, installing Windows apps is done by issuing a wine command in a command line interface.
- Upgrading Zorin's Wine and installing Windows apps manually are advanced skills. One must work within a Linux command line interface and have a deeper understanding of Wine.
- In conclusion, installing Wine Development in Zorin OS may not be appropriate in a situation where stability is a mission-critical requirement, and upgrading Zorin's Wine with current versions of Wine Stable or Wine Development requires having, or being willing to acquire, a degree of low-level technical understanding of both Linux and Wine.
And here are some pros.
- An up-to-date version of Wine may be required in order to use Wine to run your Windows app on Linux.
- Accessing and using important features of Wine, such as Wine prefixes, the Wine environment variables, and the several Wine commands is natural and extends one's control of the environment within which Windows apps run.
- Manually installing and using Wine is a good introduction to accessing these features of Wine and may, it itself, make upgrading Zorin's Wine an attractive option.
- In conclusion, upgrading Zorin's Wine is appropriate if doing so is required in order to run a particular Windows app or if you have a technical bent and are interested in acquiring a deeper understanding of Wine.
How to install Wine manually in Zorin OS
If foregoing the automated convenience of Windows App Support in favor of taking hands-on manual control of Wine is what you prefer or need, follow the Ubuntu 18.04 procedure for installing wine.
During installation, any previously installed Wine is uninstalled. When this happens, there will be warnings from the two third-party support apps, PlayOnLinux and Winetricks, which depend on Wine. Subsequently, Wine is restored and, in my experience, PlayOnLinux and Winetricks still work.
